The original iteration of Tempe Playlist (formerly Tempe Playlist: Saturn Sessions) features musicians, poets and singers who live, work or study in the 8524 zip codes. The playlist features a variety of musical genres and showcases the range of talent and musical genres represented in Tempe. This is a locally-inspired collection of songs that captures the talents and the vibe of 52 musicians who live in Tempe. Local artist Drew Hernandez designed the t-shirt. Bands included Remi Goode, Grupo BombAZo, Rozotadi, The Chicharras, Banana Gun and Chrome Rhino. There was something for every musical palette, with genres ranging from cumbia to hip-hop to rock.
Six Tempe-based musicians showcased their talents live. In June 2021, the Community Arts team partnered with the Tempe Diablos for the first Tempe Jam.

In addition to this, selected musicians received professional development opportunities such as a professional recording session and photoshoot. Each selected artist/band was paid to have one song placed on the 'Tempe Playlist' on Spotify. This two-year project widened its call for music to musicians who live, work, or play anywhere in Tempe (not just the south). In 2020, Tempe Playlist was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and in partnership with AZ Beat Lab and TopKat Studios.

The first playlist included both poetry and music which were edited into two publicly-broadcasted radio segments. The first Tempe Playlist provided those who live, work and/or study in south Tempe with a platform to share their story and connect with their community through free, locally-infused art that is accessible to everyone. The team worked with KJZZ’s Spot 127 Youth Media Center to produce the playlist. A partnership between the arts and public transit teams was created and as a result, Tempe Playlist: Saturn Sessions was born. Orbit Saturn was the perfect creative connector because it travels within south Tempe and is freely accessible to all Tempeans. This location was chosen because of a lack of arts engagement.
